Kuala Lumpur is home to quirky, unique attractions, a popular one being the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park. A sanctuary for a wide variety of butterfly species, it’s a must-see destination for nature lovers. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect when visiting the unique attraction.
What's on Offer at Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park?
Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the park is easy to reach by public transportation (or by car or alternative modes of transport – including on foot). Open daily from 9 am to 6 pm, there’s ample time to visit the sanctuary that’s home to over 6,000 butterflies from more than 120 species.
There’s often a spectacular array of colour as delicate wings flutter in hues that swirl. Few local experiences beat being so close to one of nature’s most colourful creatures in an environment that mimics its natural habitat.
The park has a breeding area, where visitors can see them in different stages of development.
The Aviary
One of the highlights of the park was the aviary, a large, enclosed area where I was able to walk freely among the flying beauties. Greeted by hundreds of butterflies fluttering about with ease like happenstance, all I could hear was the sound of their wings as they gracefully flew around my head.
A large space covered in greenery, the aviary is tranquil and is conducive to visitors ‘bonding’ with nature.

The Experience
As I wandered about, it was the unique patterns and colours that caught my eye. Some butterflies are bright and bold while others are more subdued. Although none landed on me, I could see that the larger ones would be the size of my hand.
Flitting around the blooms, sipping nectar, resting on flowers, and basking in the sun, they were uninhibited. Their sense of disinhibition gave me the opportunity to get a closer look at their intricate patterns and vivid colours.
The atmosphere is peaceful, which makes for a rejuvenating experience. It was a great way to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the world amid the bustle of Kuala Lumpur.
For photography afficionados, visiting the park is a great opportunity to capture some of nature’s finer details.
What Else Can you See at Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park?
In addition to the butterflies, the park also has a large collection of tropical plants and flowers, many of which are native to Malaysia. Imbued also with a small lake, it’s possible to see koi fish.
The park offers educational programs and guided tours, designed to teach visitors about the different butterfly species and their natural habitats. Although I didn’t take one, I’d anticipate the guided tours are a great way to learn a deal more about the park and the butterflies that live there.
