Rome is a beautiful city with breath-taking architecture and history at every turn. It's also synonymous with style, elegance, and sophistication.  As an expat, you'll quickly realise how important fashion is to Romans and that you need to dress for success to thrive.

Roman Fashion

It’s not just a matter of looking good, it's a way of life.  Romans dress with purpose so it's essential to know the fashion faux pas to avoid and the principles to live by while living in the city.

So, what’s the dress for success key to thriving in Rome?  The answer will be revealed.

My Fashion Faux Pas in Rome

Moving to Rome from London, a very tolerant and eclectic fashion metropolis, I entered Rome’s ancient streets self-assured and full of self-confidence, content that my sense of style was appropriate and would be accepted by any critics. However, after only three months in the beating heart of beloved Italia, I found myself becoming ever more conscious of my clothing choices.

Sporting the latest D&G (or Ray Ban) sunglasses or Louis Vuitton handbag marks a sign of significance and affords one a degree of fashion respect.

Wearing no-brand sunglasses with leather sandals bought in India, together with skinnies transported from London, I quickly learned my eclectic sense of style attracted disapproval and curious glances.

To an Italian, brand name etiquette matters and brings with it social status, a necessity in gaining some respect (particularly in the professional world).

Seasonal Fashion Etiquette in Rome (and Italy)

Strict (possibly unwritten) seasonal fashion etiquette is also ever-present in Italy. It's essential to dress appropriately for each change on the calendar.

For instance, flip-flops are an unacceptable spring fashion accessory (and are generally only ever permitted if you’re going to the spiaggia [beach])! Put away your winter boots as soon as winter is over! And avoid wearing white during winter (as it’s a colour reserved for summer).

Research and Know Italian Fashion Norms

It's always best to research norms including fashion styles and etiquette before moving to a new place (even within your own country). And knowing what's acceptable and what's not when it comes to fashion is equally important.  Learn from my mistakes - fashion is a formidable force!

In fact, Italian fashion is renowned worldwide for its high-quality fabrics, innovative designs, and attention to detail. Key principles revolve around quality, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. Italians often prioritise quality over quantity and invest in high-quality pieces that last for years.

They also believe in dressing appropriately for different occasions, with a focus on tailored pieces, understated elegance, and attention to details such as accessories and grooming.

Italian Fashion Principles to Live By

To be appropriate while living and working in Rome, consider a few general principles to live by.

Depending of course on the type and nature of your job, consider dressing in a sophisticated and stylish manner - tailored suits or blazers and well-polished shoes are well-considered by Italians (and it's often the norm for both men and women).  Avoid dressing too casually or revealingly, as this may be considered inappropriate in many professional settings (particularly in Rome with the influence of the Vatican).

When it comes to social events, dressing up is essential, with Italians often opting for chic cocktail dresses or smart suits. It's also important to pay attention to details, such as matching accessories and having well-groomed hair and makeup.

Where to Update Your Wardrobe in Rome

So, you’ve moved to Rome but you don’t have a wardrobe that you feel is suitable.  No need to worry – sta calma [stay calm]!  The city is famous for designer stores and boutiques, but there are also plenty of affordable options for those on a budget.

Popular shopping destinations include Via del Corso, Via Condotti, and the Spanish Steps area, which are filled with high-end shops and luxury brands.

For more affordable options, try exploring the local markets, such as the Porta Portese flea market or the Campo de' Fiori market.  Here you’ll find unique pieces at a fraction of the cost.

It's also worth noting that many Italians take great pride in dressing well, so don't be afraid to ask locals for fashion advice or recommendations on where to shop.

The Dress for Success Key to Living in Rome?

So, what’s the key to dressing appropriately in Rome?  Focus on timeless elegance and understated sophistication.

Living as an expat in Rome can be an incredible experience, and knowing what to wear will make your stay in the city more comfortable and enjoyable. So, if you're planning to move to Rome or just visiting, remember to dress appropriately for the season, work and the occasion, and try to understand the local fashion culture.

Remember to ask for help if you're uncertain what to wear.
