It is the world’s oldest republic and has outlived some powerful neighbouring kingdoms. San Marino is also the world’s fifth smallest nation, a curious place perched on and around a mountain in Italy’s east. My visit was extended, the result of a snowstorm that closed roads for three days. It gave me an opportunity to get to know a little more about the micro nation that is reported by many to lack the heart and soul of its closest neighbour. What was the highlight? I enjoyed walking the snow-covered cobblestone streets of the Unesco-listed Citta di San Marino. Has this brief overview of San Marino prompted you to consider a visit?
