Known officially as the Palestinian Territories — divided between the West Bank and Gaza — Palestine is far from a conventional stop on a Middle Eastern itinerary. It’s a place constantly wrapped in controversy, much of it fuelled — and often amplified — by Western media. Yet beyond the headlines lies a reality far richer and more nuanced than most imagine.
Despite the name’s frequent and often grim appearances in the news, my experiences in the West Bank were overwhelmingly positive. Yes, the scars of political conflict and human suffering are visible, but they’re part of a deeply complex history shaped by the ambitions of nations. What stood out to me most, however, were the people — hospitable, resilient, and eager to share the beauty of their land and culture.
Palestine is home to incredible historical sites like Jericho, some of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world, and the kind of authentic cuisine that lingers in your memory long after your trip ends. It’s a destination that challenges perceptions, rewards open-minded travellers, and leaves a mark on your understanding of the world.
Be sensible — Gaza remains off-limits for tourists — and approach your visit with curiosity and care. If you do, I doubt you’ll leave disappointed. I hope this overview of Palestine stirs your interest and inspires you to explore this misunderstood corner of the world.
