Japan is a unique fusion of ancient and modern worlds, a country so rich in tradition it's hard to let go once you leave: it captivates even the least inspired traveller. There's intrigue at every turn and it comes in various packages: watching the dance routine of a geisha, sleeping in a ryokan, feasting on delicate and fresh sushi, sitting in a bubbling hot spring or taking the shinkansen (bullet train) across the country.
