My exploration of Bulgaria is limited in both time and distance. Yet, the city limits within which I stayed did not restrict my understanding of the country’s essentials: gold-domed churches; ecclesiastical murals; high mountain passes; turquoise Black Sea waters; snow-dusted peaks; and hipster neighbourhoods all have their place.
The more I spoke to locals and travellers alike, the more I regretted not spending time outside of Sofia. Although I can only speak about my experiences, I encourage you to travel further afield to immerse yourself in the country’s beauty.

Non-EU citizens: Citizens of non-EU countries may need a visa to enter Bulgaria. The visa requirements vary depending on the country of origin and the purpose and length of stay. Some countries have a visa-free regime with Bulgaria for short stays, while others require a visa. Check with the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home country.

Electronic visa: Bulgaria also offers an electronic visa (e-visa) system for citizens of certain countries. The e-visa is a single-entry visa that allows a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Visa requirements can change, so check with the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home country.

Best time to visit

Bulgaria has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons which make it a year-round destination.  Here's an outline:

Spring (March to May):

It's the best time for nature lovers. The countryside is in full bloom with wildflowers and the temperatures are mild. It may still occasionally rain.

Summer (June to August):

This is peak tourist season. The Black Sea coast is a popular destination. Inland, temperatures can be hot and dry, but there are plenty of mountain resorts with cooler temperatures.

Autumn (September to November):

This is the time for wine lovers, as the grape harvest season begins in September. It's also ideal for hiking and outdoor activities in the mountains.

Winter (December to February):

This is peak ski season. The country has several ski resorts, including Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo.
